Toride City, Ibaraki

25-07 Japanese Kite making day - 5

This popular Tokyo bedroom community has a population of a little over 100,000 people and is only 40 minutes from Ueno Station in Tokyo via express train. The Tone River passes along the southern border of Toride, which also marks the Ibaraki / Chiba prefecture borders. The Tone River is considered to be one of the three greatest rivers in Japan with a length of 322 km which makes it the second longest river in Japan after the Shinano River. Toride is especially well known as the home of a Kirin brewery and a Nissin Cup Noodle factory.

The largest beer producers in Japan are Asahi, Kirin, and Sapporo. Both Asahi and Kirin Breweries are in Ibaraki Prefecture with Kirin directly in Toride city. Brewery tours for both companies are possible for the public.

Nissin Food Products Co., Ltd. is the name of a company in Japan that makes instant ramen noodles. Established in 1948, instant noodles and cup noodles were both invented by Nissin's founder, Momofuku Ando in 1958 and today are marketed not only throughout Asia, but in the Americas and Europe as well.
